Xiaomi drops ‘Mi’ branding for premium smartphones

All premium Xiaomi smartphones will no linger carry the ‘Mi’ branding after the company decided to drop the name from the third quarter of this years.

This means from now onwards, Xiaomi smartphones will no longer be identified as ‘Mi’ smartphones, and instead carry the full ‘Xiaomi’ name.

The news was reported by XDA which confirmed the move and said that all Mi smartphones will be rebranded to Xiaomi to unify its global brand presence.

“Starting in 2021 Q3, Xiaomi’s product series “Mi” will be renamed to “Xiaomi”. This change will unify our global brand presence and close the perception gap between the brand and its products.” Xiaomi sid in a statement.

Xiaomi admitted that the change may take some time to take effect in all regions but further clarifies that the new brand identity will see Xiaomi products now offering what Mi brands used to offer.

'Mi' branding

“With the introduction of the new brand identity, two distinct product series will sit beneath the parent brand.

“Xiaomi products represent the pinnacle of technology and offer a premium experience. Redmi products bring big innovation at a more accessible price point and are aimed at younger audience.

“This differentiation is also reflected in our updated logos, with both the Xiaomi and Redmi logotypes under the parent brand logo.” Xiaomi further explains.

It was also noted by GSM Arena that in line with ‘Mi’ branding removal, all Mi Stores will also be rebranded to Xiaomi stores in the future.
