Tips: You now have 7 minutes to delete a WhatsApp message

In Malay, there’s a saying that goes “Terlajak perahu, boleh diunder, terlajak kata, buruk padahnya“, in which was also true when it came to the digital age where SMS and WhatsApp-ing is concerned.

Well, not anymore because WhatsApp’s latest update will give you a good 7 minutes to re-think your message after it’s sent, and delete it.

The new ‘delete function’ actually doesn’t help when you are in an active conversation because the message would still get delivered, and can be seen.  However, if you happen to send a message to the wrong person, or wrong group, you could spare further embarrassment by deleting the message.

Once you have deleted the message, the deleted message would appear as “This message has been deleted” will appear in the recipient’s chat, so unless someone print screens your mistakenly sent message, you are safe from further embarrassments.

HOW TO DELETE A MESSAGE ON WHATSAPP

According to WhatsApp’s official site, there’s three steps to delete a message, and it goes as seen below:

  • Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete.
  • Tap and hold the message > choose Delete from the menu. Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once.
  • Tap Delete > Delete for Everyone.

You will have 7 minutes from sending to delete the message, but WhatsApp also says that the function only works if both sender and receiver are on the latest WhatsApp version.

If for some reason you need to delete certain WhatsApp messages from a discussion in your phone, you can also delete selective WhatsApp messages you receive.

According to WhatsApp, “Deleting messages for yourself allows you to delete your copy of messages you’ve sent or received from your phone but this has no effect on your recipients’ chats. Your recipients will still see the messages in their chat screen.”

Deleting a message in this case is similar to what you did above as the steps below suggest.

  1. Tap and hold the message > choose Delete from the menu. Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once.
  2. Tap Delete > Delete for Me.

These are indeed interesting functions by WhatsApp, but just in case not everyone in your circle had updated their WhatsApp, be extra careful before tapping ‘send’.
