POCO X8 Pro Max Review: The Flagship Killer That Might Make the POCO F8 Pro Look Expensive

The POCO X8 Pro Max enters the market carrying a lot of expectations. POCO has spent the last few years building a reputation for delivering flagship-like performance at prices that undercut many of its rivals and the recent POCO F8 Pro and POCO F8 Ultra I managed to review is proof that the brand has what it takes.

Now with the X8 Pro Max, the company promises a premium experience that combines top-tier performance, capable cameras, long battery life and advanced AI features without pushing into ultra-premium pricing territory.

That said, in this review, I cannot help but not compare this phone with the POCO F8 Pro (which I currently own) and POCO F8 Ultra which I had previously tested, and although I know all three phones are for different market, I can’t help but question if the POCO X8 Pro Max could match the POCO F8 Pro and if you could save a few bucks by opting for the former.

Read on if you want to know more and to have my answer to that particular question.

Main Highlights

POCO markets the X8 Pro Max as a smartphone that delivers flagship-level experiences without flagship pricing. After using it extensively, that claim feels surprisingly accurate as I felt the phone is rather balanced in most departments.

That said, the standout feature is undoubtedly its balance. Many phones excel in one area while compromising in others but the X8 Pro Max feels like a device that has been carefully tuned to provide a strong experience across performance, photography, battery life and everyday usability.

Gaming performance is among the strongest in its class, while the camera system finally feels mature enough to compete with more expensive devices. Like most Xiaomi based phones, the AI-powered software features are also genuine and not just for show.

Perhaps most importantly, the phone rarely feels like it is struggling. Whether I was recording videos, editing content for TikTok, multitasking between apps or playing demanding games, the experience remained smooth and responsive.

Design, Body and Durability

The POCO X8 Pro Max felt premium when held.

The rear panel has a soft matte finish that feels pleasant in the hand and does an excellent job resisting fingerprints. Unlike glossy phones that quickly become smudged, the X8 Pro Max remains clean-looking throughout the day. I am not a fan of the line on the back finish but I am guessing some may love the added aesthetics.

The frame feels sturdy and gives the device a reassuring solidity. Despite housing a large battery and flagship-level hardware, the weight distribution is well-balanced and comfortable during extended use.

The sligh curved edges help improve grip, making the phone feel smaller than its actual dimensions suggest. During gaming sessions or video streaming marathons, hand fatigue was minimal.

In terms of durability, the X8 Pro Max inspires confidence. The display protection feels robust and the overall construction shows very little flex when pressure is applied and it does come with an IP68 rating which means splashes and dust are nothing to worry about.

The buttons remain firm and tactile, while the frame feels resistant to everyday knocks and bumps.

I used this phone without a case and had it being carried in pockets and bags. Despite that, the phone showed minimal signs of wear and a slight drop from a metre of height (table height) didn’t damage the device at all.

Screen & Display

The large AMOLED panel of the phone produces vibrant colours, deep blacks and excellent contrast. Watching Netflix, YouTube and TikTok videos is genuinely enjoyable, with content appearing sharp and punchy. In my opinion, it was better than what I experienced with the POCO F8 Pro.

Brightness levels are particularly impressive as even under direct sunlight, I rarely struggled to view messages, maps or social media content with the phone having a typical brightness of 800 nits, but able to go to 3500nits.

The 120Hz refresh rate is typical to phones these days, but it does contributes significantly to the smooth experience when scrolling through websites, social media feeds and apps feels fluid and responsive.

Overall, the screen and display is flagship level and it does not dissapoint.

Audio System

The stereo speaker setup delivers a surprisingly immersive audio experience.

Vocals remain clear, dialogue is easy to understand and the speakers can reach impressive volume levels without significant distortion.

Watching movies and gaming without earphones feels enjoyable thanks to the wide stereo separation. Sound effects during games feel more immersive compared to many competing devices.

Bass performance remains limited compared to dedicated speakers, which is expected, but the overall tuning is balanced and pleasant.

I prefer using earbuds when listening to audio, but I think for most users, the audio quality will be more than sufficient for entertainment and content consumption.

You can see a video of the audio and screen of the phone below.

Processor, RAM & Storage

I think what really differentiates the POCO X8 Pro Max with the flagship POCO F8 Series is the processor. The X8 Pro Max is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500s, and while this processor is also considered a flagship processor, it cannot defeat the Snapdragon 8 in terms of raw power.

This can be felt when I try to render my TikTok videos with the phone being somewhat lethergic at such task although I must say it does is faster than phones which are in the same price bracket.

Despite that, the phone still delivers exceptional speed when launching apps, multitasking and gaming with the phone performance remaining consistently strong.

Together with the 12GB of RAM included in the phone, games generally run smoothly even at high graphics settings, with stable frame rates and effective thermal management.

The phone does becomes warm during extended gaming sessions but never reaching uncomfortable levels.

Software

The uses the Xiaomi HyperOS 3 which is based on Android 16.

My POCO X8 Pro Max review presents that animations are smooth, menus are easy to navigate and the user interface feels modern without becoming overly complicated.

The AI features are among the highlights with tools such as AI photo enhancement, AI writing assistance, live translation and intelligent search capabilities.

Despite the positives, some pre-installed applications are still present, but they can be uninstalled although the task alone is time consuming.

Camera

The camera system comes in the form of a dual camera set-up with a 50MP main camera which is paired with a 8MP ultra-wide camera.

Photos captured during daylight are detailed, colourful and generally reliable. Dynamic range is strong, helping preserve details in both shadows and bright areas. You can see sample photos below.

Here’s a video of me showing you the zoom of the phone.

Portrait mode performs well, producing natural-looking background blur while maintaining accurate subject separation. Below are two portrait photos taken of myself.

The ultra-wide camera delivers respectable results, although image quality still drops slightly compared to the primary sensor. This remains a common limitation among devices in this category but if you are not fussy, its still pretty great compared to the quality of images you will get in budget smartphones.

Night photography has also improved significantly. Low-light images appear brighter and cleaner and noise control is better and details remain relatively intact.

The photos below are samples of photos I took at night with the POCO X8 Pro Max.

For video recording, the main camera produces stable footage with good colour reproduction and strong dynamic range during my POCO X8 Pro Max review. Content creators will appreciate the quality available for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

However, the video system is not flawless. Low-light video recording still trails behind some premium flagship competitors, and occasional focus hunting can occur in challenging lighting conditions.

You can see the video sample from the phone below.

Despite these limitations, the camera setup performs above expectations for its price category and should satisfy most users.

Battery

The POCO X8 Pro Max battery life is also good as it comes with a 8500mAh battery. This is among the largest batteries in a phone to date.

The large battery comfortably lasts an entire day, even with heavy usage involving gaming, photography, video streaming and social media browsing.

Moderate users may find themselves reaching well into a second day before needing a charger.

Charging speeds can reach 100W with the phone supporting up to 27W reverse charging.

That said, the X8 Pro Max strikes an excellent balance between battery longevity and charging speed.

Conclusion and Where to Buy

After spending considerable time with the POCO X8 Pro Max for this review, I can confidently say it is one of the most balanced smartphones POCO has ever produced.

It delivers flagship-level performance, a beautiful display, reliable cameras, excellent battery life and genuinely useful AI features while maintaining aggressive pricing from RM2,199.

As a flagship killer, the sacrifices come in terms of the processor and the camera setup, but other specifications are a match for most flagships out there.

When compared with the POCO F8 Pro, I personally think the extra RM400 paid to get a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor is worth it, but if you are tight on budget, the POCO X8 Pro Max is in no way a poor substitute as it is also ideal for gamers, content creators, students, professionals and anyone looking for flagship features without paying flagship prices.

In Malaysia, the device can typically be purchased through POCO’s official online stores, authorised retailers, major e-commerce platforms such as Shopee and Lazada, as well as selected mobile network partners.

Buyers looking for the best deals should watch for monthly platform sales, voucher campaigns, bank promotions and flash sales which often provide significant discounts and free gifts.
