Xiaomi 17T Review: Photography phone without the extraordinary price

The Xiaomi T Series has always occupied a very interesting position within Xiaomi’s smartphone lineup.

It bridges the gap between the Redmi series and the flagship Xiaomi numbered series, offering flagship-level performance while sacrificing only a few premium extras to achieve a far more attractive price.

After spending considerable time using the Xiaomi 17T, I think Xiaomi has refined the formula once again by focusing on improving the overall user experience of this series.

Compared to the rest of the Xiaomi 17 family, the Xiaomi 17T positions itself perfectly for users who want flagship-level speed and imaging without paying flagship prices. While the Xiaomi 17 (which I reviewed recently) and Xiaomi 17 Ultra understandably offer more premium hardware, the gap has become noticeably smaller this year.

That said, this Xiaomi 17T review might help you decide if adding extra bucks to get the premium Xiaomi 17 series is worth it, or should you just go for the Xiaomi 17T instead.

Main Highlights

Xiaomi markets the 17T around three major strengths: flagship performance, Leica-inspired imaging, and AI-powered software experiences.

Performance is one of the biggest reasons to buy this device. Apps launch almost instantly, multitasking feels effortless, and demanding games run smoothly with consistently high frame rates. During my usage, thermal management also impressed me. Even after extended gaming sessions or long camera use, the phone became warm but never uncomfortable to hold.

The camera system is another standout. Xiaomi continues to bring premium computational photography to the T Series, producing images with excellent dynamic range, rich colours and pleasing contrast without looking overly artificial.

AI has also become much more useful this generation. Instead of adding gimmicks that few people use, Xiaomi focuses on practical daily features like writing assistance, image editing, voice transcription, translation, smart search and productivity enhancements. These features genuinely help rather than simply existing for marketing purposes.

The final highlight is value. The Xiaomi 17T feels remarkably close to a flagship smartphone despite costing significantly less than Xiaomi’s premium models.

Design, Body and Durability

At first glance, the Xiaomi 17T looks familiar, but that isn’t a criticism. Xiaomi has matured its design language into something clean, elegant and instantly recognisable.

The back feels silky smooth while resisting fingerprints reasonably well. The aluminium frame gives the phone reassuring rigidity, making it feel much more expensive than many competitors within the same price bracket. Every button has a satisfying click, and the overall construction leaves little room for complaints.

The flat frame improves grip compared to older curved designs, making prolonged use much more comfortable. – I personally like flat screens as they are easier to protect with additional tempered glass.

When it comes to weight, the weight distribution is excellent, preventing the phone from feeling excessively top-heavy.

Daily durability also inspires confidence. The display is protected by strengthened glass while the frame feels resistant to twisting. I would nonethless always recommend the use of a case despite the phone’s durability because scratches can be an eyesore regardless of how small they appear.

That said, unless deliberately abused, the Xiaomi 17T should easily survive years of normal daily use.

Screen & Display

The display continues to be one of the Xiaomi T Series’ biggest strengths.

The Xiaomi 17T features a vibrant 6.59-inch AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate support that delivers an exceptionally smooth experience throughout the interface. Scrolling feels fluid, animations remain responsive and gaming benefits greatly from the fast touch response.

Brightness has improved over the previous generation, making outdoor visibility much easier even under direct sunlight. HDR content also looks excellent with impressive contrast, deep blacks and vibrant colours.

Colour calibration deserves praise as well. Images look natural without becoming oversaturated, while users who prefer more vivid colours still have several calibration modes available.

Watching YouTube, Netflix and Disney+ is genuinely enjoyable thanks to excellent colour reproduction and sharp resolution. Combined with the slim bezels, the display provides an immersive viewing experience.

Audio System

The stereo speakers deliver surprisingly powerful performance for a smartphone within this category.

Vocals remain clear even at higher volume levels, while bass has noticeably improved compared to previous Xiaomi T Series devices. You can hear it yourself below.

Although dedicated Bluetooth speakers still outperform any smartphone, the Xiaomi 17T is perfectly capable of watching movies, gaming or listening to music without external speakers.

Dolby Atmos support adds a wider soundstage, especially when using compatible headphones.

Call quality also remains consistently excellent, with strong microphone performance during both voice and video calls.

Processor, RAM & Storage

Performance has always been a defining strength of the T Series, and the Xiaomi 17T continues that tradition.

The MediaTek Dimensity 8500-Ultra chipset delivers flagship-class performance that comfortably handles intensive multitasking, high-end gaming, 4K video editing and demanding productivity tasks.

When making TikTok videos, the rendering/finalizing of the video does show slight sluggishness, but is far better than most MediaTek based devices I’ve tried before. You can see me using the phone to produce a TikTok Video below.

Games such as EA FC, PUBG Mobile, and Call of Duty Mobile all run smoothly with consistently high graphical settings.

Thermal management deserves particular praise. Xiaomi appears to have improved its cooling system significantly, allowing longer gaming sessions before thermal throttling becomes noticeable.

RAM management is equally impressive. Numerous applications remain active in memory without frequent reloads, making multitasking effortless.

Storage speeds are extremely fast, resulting in rapid application launches, quicker file transfers and shorter installation times.

Compared to the Xiaomi 17, I would say that the Xiaomi 17T’s processor isn’t as powerful as the Xiaomi 17, but this is expected as Xiaomi does have to cut corners to keep the Xiaomi 17T more affordable and such saving usually hits the processor of a device.

Software

HyperOS continues evolving into a cleaner and more polished operating system.

Animations feel smoother than previous generations, while the overall interface appears less cluttered. Xiaomi has also reduced unnecessary software duplication, making the user experience more streamlined.

AI integration is one of this year’s biggest software improvements.

Useful features include AI-powered writing assistance, document summarisation, intelligent photo editing, object removal, AI image expansion, real-time translation, voice transcription and productivity enhancements that genuinely improve daily workflows.

Google Gemini integration also feels more deeply incorporated into the system, making voice interactions and AI assistance faster than before.

Although some AI tools still require internet connectivity, most of the commonly used features perform reliably.

Camera

Photography remains one of the Xiaomi 17T’s strongest selling points.

The main 50MP camera consistently captures detailed images with excellent dynamic range and pleasing colour science. Leica-inspired processing gives photos a more natural appearance rather than aggressively boosting saturation.

Portrait mode produces convincing background separation with attractive skin tones, while edge detection remains highly accurate.

The 50MP telephoto camera performs particularly well for portraits and medium-range zoom shots. Image quality remains impressive even beyond standard optical zoom ranges. I noticed as if there’s some sound when the zoom is used, which is probably the lenses interchanging.

The 12MP ultra-wide lens also performs solid, maintaining colour consistency with the primary sensor while preserving plenty of detail although not as much as the other two lenses.

Night photography continues to improve. Images remain bright without becoming excessively noisy, and highlights are handled much better than older Xiaomi models.

You can see some samples of photos taken below.

Video recording is another strong point.

The main camera captures stabilised footage with excellent sharpness and natural colours. Autofocus is fast and reliable, while exposure transitions appear smooth during movement.

A video sample of me vlogging with the phone’s front and back cameras can be seen below.

The 32MP front camera performs well for selfies and video calls, producing natural-looking skin tones with good detail.

The only noticeable weaknesses appear under extremely challenging lighting conditions where the ultra-wide camera produces slightly softer images, and digital zoom beyond its practical range naturally loses detail. However, these are common limitations even among considerably more expensive smartphones.

Overall, the Xiaomi 17T produces images that consistently exceed expectations for its price category.

Battery

The Xiaomi 17T comes with a large 6500mAh batery which can lasts an entire day even with heavy use involving gaming, photography, navigation and video streaming. On my normal daily use, I could easily stretch usage into a second day.

Charging remains incredibly fast thanks to the 67W wired charging. The phone doesn’y come with wireless charging which is a shame. It does however come with 22.5 wired reverse charging which can be beneficial.

Nonetheless, even after draining the battery almost completely, reaching a comfortable daily charge takes surprisingly less than 10 minutes with the accompanying 67W charging brick.

Heat generation during charging also remains well controlled with the Xiaomi 17T performing well during this charging review.

Conclusion and Where to Buy

After using the Xiaomi 17T, I believe Xiaomi has delivered one of its most balanced T Series smartphones to date.

Rather than chasing specifications for marketing purposes, Xiaomi has refined the phone to be a phone that takes good photos, can last a whole day withoout charge, and is able to do intense task without much fuss.

The display is also excellent and there is really not much to complaint about especially when you compare what rival devices offer.

Naturally, the Xiaomi 17 would remain more superior if you want better or more premium specifications and user experience, but the Xiaomi 17T narrows that gap significantly while maintaining a far more attractive price. If I really had to complaint about the Xiaomi 17T in this review, it would be the speed of the phone rendering TikTok videos, but even that has improved.

That said, students, professionals, mobile gamers, content creators and anyone seeking flagship performance without flagship pricing should consider the Xiaomi 17T as a device to own because it starts at RM2,099 which is pretty affordable considering what you get.

In Malaysia, the Xiaomi 17T can be purchased from RM2,099 through Xiaomi Stores nationwide, the official Xiaomi online store, Shopee Mall, Lazada Flagship Store and authorised retailers.

Buyers should also look out for seasonal promotions during major online shopping campaigns such as 7.7, 8.8, 9.9, 11.11 and 12.12, where additional discounts, vouchers, trade-in bonuses and free gifts are commonly available. Thank you for reading this Xiaomi 17T review.
