REDMI Note 17 Pro Max Review: The Battery Monster That Makes Some Interesting Trade-Offs

After reviewing the REDMI Note 17 Pro review, I had a lot of hopes for the more expensive and Pro Max version of the REDMI Note 17 Series as I take my sweet time to review the REDMI Note Pro Max.

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max is not simply a bigger version of the REDMI Note 17 Pro.

It comes with a different processor, a larger battery, faster charging and some additional features. At the same time, there are areas where the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max does not feel like the huge generational upgrade that its “Pro Max” name might suggest.

In fact, there are some areas I felt the Pro variant had a win over what is supposed to be the bigger, better variant of the REDMI Note 17 Series.

Main highlights

The biggest selling point of the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max is the 10,000mAh battery.

This is an unusually large battery for a smartphone and Xiaomi combines it with 100W HyperCharge which means the phone does not simply last a long time; it can also recharge surprisingly quickly considering how large the battery is.

Xiaomi claims up to three days of battery life under its testing conditions.

Like the REDMI Note 17 Pro, it  also comes with  IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K protection, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and certification for resistance to drops from up to three metres under specified laboratory conditions.

Xiaomi also says the phone can withstand submersion in up to two metres of freshwater for up to 72 hours under its certification conditions.

Design, body and durability

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max is largely the same size and has the same body frame with the REDMI Note 17 Pro.

This is not a small or lightweight phone and the large battery naturally adds some weight to the device although there’s nothing to complain about as it’s not too far different from other smartphones I’ve tested before.

The back has a smooth, understated white finish rather than the glossy surface that attracts fingerprints making it feel more expensive than some of its mid-range competitors.

The Cloud Blush version I had is particularly interesting because its colour changes with light, giving the phone a slightly different appearance depending on where I use it.

With Gorilla Glass Victus 2 display and multiple IP ratings, having the phone comes without much worry although I must admit, I’d still use the phone with the accompanying case.

Screen & Display

Like the REDMI Note 17 Pro, the 6.83-inch AMOLED display of the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max is a joy to watch.

The 1.5K resolution gives text, photographs and videos a sharp appearance without making everything unnecessarily demanding on the battery. The 120Hz refresh rate also makes scrolling through websites, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok feel smooth.

Colours are vibrant without looking excessively artificial, and blacks have the deep appearance I expect from an AMOLED screen.

The display supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, while the 12-bit colour depth gives it plenty of room for displaying subtle colour differences.

Except for the HDR10+ and Dolby Vision on the Pro Max, the display experience of the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max is very similar to the REDMI Note 17 Pro.

Audio system

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max uses stereo speakers and supports Dolby Atmos.

For normal use, I found the speakers loud enough for watching YouTube, TikTok and short videos without immediately reaching for headphones.

Voices are clear, and there is enough bass to prevent music from sounding completely flat.

One advantage of this phone is the higher speaker volume boosting which can reach up to 400%.  This is useful when I really need the extra volume, although as I said for the REDMI Note 17 Pro, maximum loudness is not necessarily the same thing as maximum sound quality.

I prefer the sound at normal volume levels, because it is more balanced. Pushing the speakers to their extreme volume can make the audio thinner and less pleasant.

For a phone in this category, however, the speaker system is more than adequate for everyday entertainment. You can see how the display and audio(speaker) performs in the video below.

Processor, RAM & Storage

This is  where I have mixed feelings about the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max.

The version I had came with a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 processor, paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage.

For normal activities such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Chrome, YouTube, Canva and general multitasking, the phone feels responsive.

Apps open quickly, switching between applications is generally smooth and the 120Hz display helps make the whole experience feel faster.

But the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is not what I would call an aggressive performance upgrade.

Although the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max has a much larger battery, its processor strategy feels more conservative although making TikTok videos do result in faster processing speeds if compared to the REDMI Note 17 Pro model.

You can see my test to make a TikTok video below.

For gaming, the phone is fine for casual and moderately demanding games, but I would not buy it specifically as a gaming phone.

Software

This device runs Xiaomi HyperOS 3 on top of Android.

The interface is familiar to existing Xiaomi and REDMI users, and features such as AI Writing, AI Speech Recognition, AI Interpreter, AI Dynamic Wallpapers and AI image-editing tools are all available for use. There is also Google Gemini integration and Circle to Search.

Overall, I favour the HyperOS and I really don’t have many complaints about the OS.

Xiaomi is also promising six years of security updates ensuring this phone stays relevant for years to come.

Camera

The camera system is a mixed bag for me when it comes to the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max.

On paper, the rear setup consists of a 50MP main camera with OIS and an 8MP ultra-wide camera.

The main camera is the one I would use most of the time.

In good lighting, photographs have good colour, plenty of detail and generally pleasing exposure. Portrait photographs also benefit from Xiaomi’s image-processing and AI features.

The optical image stabilisation is useful when taking photographs in less-than-perfect lighting and when recording video.

However, this is not a camera system that gives me everything.

The lack of a dedicated telephoto camera means I have to rely on digital cropping when I want to get closer to a distant subject. That is acceptable for social media but less impressive if I regularly photograph distant objects.

The ultra-wide camera is useful for architecture, landscapes and group photographs, but its lower resolution becomes more obvious when I compare it with the main camera.

Low-light photography is another area where I would keep my expectations realistic. The main camera can produce usable photographs, but it is not going to replace a much more expensive flagship camera.

Images taken with this phone can be seen below.

Video recording

The main camera can record 4K video at 30fps and 1080p video at up to 60fps.

For casual content creation, that is enough.

The 4K footage from the main camera can look good, especially in daylight, while stabilisation helps make handheld footage more usable.

However, the ultra-wide camera is limited to 1080p/30fps. There is also no HDR video recording, and the phone does not offer the kind of advanced video controls that professional creators might expect from a higher-end device.

You can see a sample of the camera video capabilities below.

So I would describe the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max camera as a good everyday camera system rather than a creator-focused camera phone.

It is more than capable of producing photographs and videos for Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, but photography enthusiasts who prioritise zoom, low-light performance or advanced video recording will probably want something more specialised.

Battery

The 10,000mAh silicon-carbon battery is enormous and perfect for those hating charging.

A normal working day is easy for the phone, with the battery able to extend beyond two days if you keep things ‘normal’..

In addition, the Pro Max supports 100W HyperCharge making juicing the phone up pretty fast. I could get about 10% of juice from just a 10 minute charge.

The difference is noticeable.

Another useful feature is up to 27W wired reverse charging.

This allows the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max to act as a large emergency power source for accessories or another phone.

Compared with most phones in the same price range, this is the feature that makes the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max stand out most clearly.

Conclusion and Where to buy

I think Xiaomi has created a phone with a very clear identity.

It is not trying to be the fastest phone in the world nor is it trying to replace a dedicated camera.

Instead, it gives me a huge battery, fast charging, a bright 120Hz AMOLED display, strong water and dust protection, good everyday cameras and a solid set of AI and software features.

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max is best suited to people who want a phone that can keep going.

If you are a heavy social-media user, TikTok creator, frequent traveller, student, outdoor user or simply someone who hates carrying a charger everywhere, the Pro Max’s huge battery is its biggest attraction.

For Malaysian buyers, the official price is RM1,999 for the 8GB+256GB version and RM2,299 for the 8GB+512GB version.
