The REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G takes a slightly different approach from the usual yearly smartphone upgrade.
Instead of chasing the biggest processor or the highest megapixel count, Xiaomi has concentrated on the things that are easy to appreciate every day: a huge battery, a bright AMOLED display, tougher construction and a more refined software experience.
In case you are wondering, yes, this is the latest REDMI Note Series after the REDMI Note 15 Series because the brand skipped 16 entirely.
Nonetheless, before I go in deeper into what this REDMI Note 17 Pro can offer, I think it’s worth to warn you that there are also some compromises despite the upgrades in battery and screen with some downgrades in what I could say are key areas for content creation.
Main highlights
Highlights of this smartphone come in its battery life, durability and display quality.
The 8,340mAh silicon-carbon battery is easily one of the most interesting features with a substantially upgrade from the 6,580mAh battery found in the REDMI Note 15 Pro 5G.
The second major highlight is durability with the phone combining Gorilla Glass Victus 2 with IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings.
Also, the 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display is another strong point as it is able to run at up to 120Hz and has a claimed peak brightness of 3,500 nits.
Based on these three highlights, I feel Xiaomi has made the REDMI Note 17 Pro feel less like a specification race but more like a phone designed to survive and remain useful for a long time. – It is a phone for the rakyat.

Design, body and durability
The first thing I notice about the REDMI Note 17 Pro is its size. This is not a small phone. At around 163.5mm tall, 78.3mm wide and 8.6mm thick, with a weight of about 223g, it has a substantial presence in the hand.
The matte finish is one of the better decisions Xiaomi has made. It feels smooth without becoming excessively slippery, while fingerprints are less obvious than they are on glossy phones. The rounded corners also make the large body more comfortable to hold.
I’m not sure if the frame and body of the phone is made of metal, but overall, the phone construction feels solid.

Xiaomi uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the screen, with the phone carrying extensive dust and water resistance certification. During my typical use where I mixed it with coins, keys and random stuff in my pocket, the phone has little to no damages to show for.
Under running water, the phone also survives and mild accidental drop do not hurt the phone especially if you use it with the accompanying case (which I did!).
The phone does feel slightly heavier and thicker, but I guess this is the trade-off of having a larger battery.
Screen & Display
The display is one of the parts of the REDMI Note 17 Pro that I would be happy to use every day.
It has a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a 2772 ร 1280 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 12-bit colour depth and up to 3,500 nits peak brightness. It also uses 3,840Hz PWM dimming and carries several TรV Rheinland eye-comfort certifications.

In normal use, the 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling through TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and web pages feel noticeably smoother than a conventional 60Hz display. Videos also look vibrant without requiring the user to understand complicated display settings.
The peak brightness from 3,500 nits meant that using the phone while under bright sun light is not an issue anymore.
That said, for watching YouTube, Netflix, browsing photos or reading articles outdoors, it is one of the phone’s strongest features.
Audio system
The REDMI Note 17 Pro uses stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio support. Xiaomi also advertises a 300% volume boost compared with its baseline volume-level measurement.
During my test, the speakers are loud enough for watching TikTok, YouTube or short videos without immediately reaching for headphones.
The stereo effect is also useful when gaming or watching movies because sound does not feel like it is coming entirely from one side.
However, louder does not automatically mean better. At maximum volume, I would still prefer headphones or a Bluetooth speaker for music because a small phone speaker cannot reproduce the depth of a larger audio system.
For casual entertainment, or when I forget my earbuds though, the audio system is more than adequate. Check the video below to see how the speakers and screen performs.
Processor, RAM & Storage
This is probably the most complicated part of the REDMI Note 17 Pro story.
The phone uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6s Gen 4, manufactured using a 4nm process, with an octa-core CPU running at up to 2.4GHz and Adreno graphics.

The configuration I got for this reviews had 8+8GB RAM with 256GB storage. This isn’t exactly my dream combo, but it does get work done. It is also the second highest variant sold by Xiaomi with the 8+8GB RAM and 512GB storage being the better option in my opion.
Anyway, for my everyday tasks, the phone feels perfectly comfortable with opening social apps, browsing the web, watching videos, switching between applications and editing simple photos are not a problem.
For everyday users the performance therefore is sufficient.
When creating TikTok videos, you can expect it to perform though if you are used to flagship devices, you will notice it is slightly slower. The video below shows this phone rendering a few videos.
Software
The REDMI Note 17 Pro runs Android 16 with Xiaomi HyperOS 3. Xiaomi says the phone receives six years of security updates, which is reassuring for someone planning to keep the phone for several years.
HyperOS 3 feels increasingly mature, and may I add one of my favourite Android versions out there. The interface is familiar to anyone who has used a recent Xiaomi or REDMI phone, while features such as HyperIsland providing more convenient access to certain ongoing activities.
AI is also becoming a bigger part of the experience with the REDMI Note 17 Pro supporting features such as AI Erase Pro, AI Glare Removal, AI Image Expansion, AI Sky, AI Bokeh, AI Image Enhancement and AI Beautify. It also supports Circle to Search and Google Gemini.
Other than that, there is not really much to say about the HyperOS 3 as it feels very polished.
Camera
The camera specification sees the REDMI Note 17 Pro using a 50MP main camera with OIS, accompanied by an 8MP ultra-wide camera. The front camera is 16MP.
The main camera’s optical image stabilisation helps when shooting handheld, particularly at night or when my hands are not perfectly steady.
In good lighting, the main camera can produce detailed photographs with pleasing colours and natural-looking portraits as seen below.

The biggest drawback however is zoom. Without a dedicated telephoto camera, digitally zooming too far can cause photographs to lose detail and this is where the phone shows it is not a premium camera phone and having just
Night photography is decent from the main camera, but again, this is not a phone I would buy primarily for photography.
For everyday photographs, food shots, family pictures, travel and social media, the camera system is capable but for serious photography, the limitations become easier to see.
Video recording
The REDMI Note 17 Pro supports Dual Video, which is genuinely useful for content creators because you can record yourself and your surroundings at the same time.
Thanks to the availability of the OIS, videos appear better and more stable. Test of the camera’s video capabilities can be seen below.
Battery
This is where the REDMI Note 17 Pro makes the biggest impression.
The 8,340mAh silicon-carbon battery is enormous for a phone in this category.
Instead of constantly checking the battery percentage before leaving home, you can comfortably go through a working day of messaging, browsing, social media, photography and video without worrying about finding a charger. My daily use shows that I can go without a charger for two days straight.

The 67W HyperCharge system is also a great pair to the massive battery as I can hit 47% after about 10 minutes of charging from 27% of battery left.
Reverse wired charging up to 22.5W is available although I would have liked having wireless charging as well on the phone to be honest.
Either way, considering the price, having 22.5 wired reverse charging is practically a bonus.
Conclusion and Where to Buy
The REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G is an interesting phone because Xiaomi has not simply tried to make everything bigger and faster.
Instead, it has concentrated on things people actually experience every day: battery life, screen quality, durability and useful software features.

The 8,340mAh battery is excellent. The 6.83-inch 120Hz AMOLED display is excellent. The durability credentials are reassuring, and HyperOS 3 brings useful AI features without making the phone difficult to operate.
